Overcoming Generalized Anxiety
with Anxiety Help Online
What Is Generalized Anxiety?
GAD is a (seemingly) uncontrollable disorder with excessive worry, fear and tension exhibited throughout the day… without a rational reason. It is characterized by frequent thoughts of disaster and worse-case outcomes of one’s: safety, safety of loved ones, finance. health, work, and relationships.
Sometimes referred to as General Anxiety, GAD lasts for at least 6 months or more. It exhibits symptoms of the inability to relax during the day or sleep at night, shortness of breath, chest pain, irritability, nausea, trembling and lack of mental focus. It can seriously impact personal relationships and job performance.
What Causes Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?
There is no one specific cause of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It often begins in childhood, but can start at any age and spiral out-of-control over time. Women are more prone than men for hormonal reasons. It is believed that there are three primary factors that contribute to the problem: Brain Chemistry, Genetics (it can run in families) and Environmental Factors, including Significant Emotional Events.
These factors are thought to create a greater sensitivity in the Sympathetic Nervous System, that in-turn, causes a more intense reaction to feelings of fear. These fear base emotions are triggered by the perception of a threat caused by:
- Stressful Situation
- Physical Feeling
- Worry about something real or imagined
- Anxious-Irrational Thought
A significant emotional event or a series of stressful events seem to be leading causes of the initial onset of GAD symptoms. Mental & physical abuse, divorce, death of a loved one, losing a job, changing schools or job stress… can all cause Anxiety Attacks, Panic Attacks, Fears and Phobias. Stress can cause GAD to become much more intense.
